Amir Khan Interview
Amir Khan

With his next fight lined up in December (against Devon Alexander for the IBF world welterweight title) and with Floyd Mayweather in his sights we asked the 26-year-old about his

“I have no regrets – whatever is meant to happen, will happen.”

What’s your career highlight so far?
Becoming the world champion. It’s everything that I ever worked for. It’s what I have trained for since I started boxing and to win it twice was just unbelievable!

Who is your greatest inspiration?
My Dad. He always keeps me grounded and puts life into perspective, which I think is important with such a busy career. I’m really close to my family, they are there to pick me up through the hard times and celebrate my success but in between they are proud of me whatever I strive to achieve.
What’s your top training tip?
Keep setting yourself new goals. Set yourself a daily, weekly or monthly goal, it’s good to plan ahead so that it gives you the ambition to carry on. Also keep your fitness regime interesting and varied, I like to mix my exercise up with running, swimming, interval training, skipping and weights.

Most important piece of training gear?
Skipping rope. Skipping is a full body work out which uses your abs to stabilise the body and strengthen the legs, shoulders and arms. Everything I need to train and keep light on my toes for a match.

Favourite foods?
Steak, chicken and salmon! Mainly because they are the right fuel for my body so I have learnt to love them along with vegetables and potatoes but I’m always up for trying something new!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Always train hard and give 100% – otherwise you’re just wasting your time.

How do you relax?
When I get some time out, I love to spend time with my wife, friends and family. Otherwise, I find time to relax when I’m travelling, especially on my flights to L.A. where I’ll settle down with a good film or some tunes.

What keeps you awake at night?
Nothing really, I always try to work as hard as I can which sends me right off to sleep. I try not to worry about things as they are probably not worth worrying about and I know my mum does all that for me while she says her prayers.

Biggest professional regret?
I have no regrets in my professional career, you learn from experience and that is the only way you can improve. Whatever is meant to happen, will happen.

What’s your top supplement recommendation?
Maxinutrition have a great range of products suitable for the everyday person to the elite sportsman. Personally, I go for their Maximuscle range, which suits my needs while I’m in training. Pre-workout, I’ll have Promax with porridge in the morning and post-training have a shake to help me to encourage muscle growth and recovery. I also stock up on Protein Milk to keep my protein levels topped up, – I always make sure there is one in my car.

Favourite sport outside of boxing and are you any good at it?
Football, I love Bolton Wanderers. Am I any good? It depends who I am playing but I definitely can give someone a good challenge.

Do you have a motto?
The harder you train in the gym the easier it is in the ring
